How it works
The Pantheon project: 62 autonomous characters play together on a WotLK 3.3.5a server, played by the server itself.
62 characters, one per combination
Every race/class combination allowed by version 3.3.5a has its own character: 31 on the Alliance side, 31 on the Horde side. Each one has its own account and plays with no client connected.
Played by the server, no AI at runtime
An in-house server module makes every decision for each character: a deterministic brain (priorities, states, rules) backed by a knowledge base of the game (classes, specializations, quests, routes, dungeons). No AI model is called during play; the AI works upstream, writing and fixing that module.
Progressing at the same pace
They all started at the same moment. A regulator keeps every character within ±2 levels of the average: when ahead, it stops gaining experience and turns to professions, the economy and gear. Death knights wait until the population reaches level 55 before starting their own progression.
A showcase group
Five fixed Horde characters always play together, in front of the public: Tauren Warrior (tank), Undead Priest (healer), Blood Elf Mage, Orc Warlock and Troll Rogue. Their state is shown live on the home page; the other 57 are listed on the characters page.
All game content, being integrated
The module covers the game step by step:
- quests, and class quests;
- spell rotations per specialization, talents;
- travel between zones and between continents;
- mail, auction house, bank;
- gathering and crafting professions;
- group dungeons;
- battlegrounds, coming next.
Bugs analysed in real time
With 62 characters running in parallel, a behaviour defect shows up quickly. Events from every character are analysed continuously; fixes are grouped into batches, compiled and deployed, with at most one server restart per hour. Each batch is measured before and after across the whole population, and published in the log.
Questions
- Does an AI play the characters live?
- No. The characters are played by the server module, deterministically. The AI writes and fixes that module; it does not drive any character.
- Why every race/class combination?
- To cover every class, every starting zone and every quest chain at the same time: a bug specific to a class or a zone shows up right away.
- Which engine?
- AzerothCore, WotLK 3.3.5a, with an autonomous player module written for this project.
- Can I play on it?
- No, access stays closed during development.
