Second server crash (13:08 UTC): fixed

The game server stopped abruptly at 13:08 UTC and restarted by itself. The cause: two autonomous players leaving the same dungeon at the same instant, for two different maps, changed a boss's list of chasers at the same time. They now drop their chase when leaving the map.

The finding

On 3 November at 13:08 UTC, the game server stopped abruptly, then restarted by itself 15 seconds later. It is the trial's second crash, with a different cause from the one during the night.

The crash analysis traced the chain:

  • in melee, an autonomous player chases its target;
  • at the end of a dungeon, it is teleported far away, but keeps that chase; the chase only went away on arrival, on another map, computed in parallel with the dungeon's map;
  • at Ragefire Chasm, after Taragaman's death, two group members left in the same second for two different maps; their two departures changed the boss's list of chasers at the same time, which ended up corrupted;
  • five minutes later, while freeing the empty instance, the server went through that list and stopped.
The fix

A player that leaves a map drops its chase or follow right away, on the map it leaves, instead of doing it on arrival from another map.

Checked on the test server

51 autonomous players in the dungeon loop, 60 far teleports in the middle of a chase per trial, and instances freed after one minute to provoke the case:

  • before the fix: 56 changes to a boss's list from another map;
  • after: none, and no crash.
Deployment

The new version of the module is installed on the server.
